Normally, by the time a trend appears in industry reports, it has already been circulating for weeks or even months. Before it becomes a measurable data point, it first appears as language.
Searches with new nuances, comments that repeatedly focus on the same idea, content that introduces a new perspective. This scattered information, most of it unstructured, can be used to identify emerging trends and stay ahead of the competition.
Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques applied to Natural Language Processing (NLP) make it possible to detect these early signals of changing trends and translate them into actionable insights. In this article, we explore how this process works and how we applied it at Bolboreta Innova Group in a real-world case.

What is NLP and why does it help anticipate trends?
Natural Language Processing (NLP) is the branch of artificial intelligence that enables machines to interpret human language as it is written or spoken. Its architecture combines statistical models, machine learning algorithms, and temporal analysis.
These systems can classify texts, extract entities, and identify recurring themes from a wide variety of inputs, including articles, searches, reviews, social media comments, transcripts, and emails, transforming them into analyzable data..
Its relevance becomes clear when we consider that, according to IBM, approximately 80 % de los datos nuevos que generan las organizaciones no están estructurados.
This is precisely where trends emerge. Search volume for a keyword confirms that a term is growing, while context explains why it is growing. For example, knowing that the keyword biodegradable fabric is being mentioned more frequently provides volume data, but understanding whether it is associated with pricing, durability, or activism reveals the intent behind that growth. This makes it possible to anticipate where the trend is heading.
How AI and NLP detect trend micro-signals before they become obvious
The combination of AI and NLP makes it possible to identify micro-signals of emerging trends within unstructured sources by analyzing language across dispersed information channels before any signal reaches significant volume. This enables companies to anticipate demand and make strategic decisions based on data.
Semantic models identify terms that begin appearing in new contexts and measure their frequency, acceleration, and surrounding context. These three variables help distinguish an emerging trend from a temporary spike in interest.
From scattered data to semantic micro-signals
The value comes from combining information from heterogeneous sources. In fact, when we approach projects of this type, the first challenge is rarely the algorithm itself. The real challenge is integrating diverse sources such as reader behaviour, search activity, publications from other media outlets, and social conversations.
In its earliest stages, an emerging trend appears as a weak signal, a semantic micro-signal, such as a term beginning to appear in unfamiliar contexts. These signals are often invisible to manual analysis or approaches based solely on volume.
When semantic analysis, which identifies what people are talking about, is combined with predictive models, which estimate where the conversation is heading, three variables become critical: frequency, the speed at which that frequency changes, and the context in which a term appears.
Systems that learn: Incremental learning
These models operate within a process of incremental learning, meaning they are never truly finished. Every prediction is compared against what happens next. This continuous feedback loop improves accuracy over time and gradually reduces false positives.
One of the clearest lessons from our projects is that this cycle cannot be completed without human intervention. The editorial team supervises the process, corrects biases and deviations, validates results, and contributes judgment that no algorithm can infer on its own. This human-in-the-loop approach allows the system to be calibrated according to the vocabulary, audience, and unique characteristics of each project.
Real-world case: Trend forecasting for a digital fashion publication
Bolboreta Desarrolla applied this approach within a digital fashion media outlet that needed to anticipate editorial trends more accurately.
The challenge: Editorial intuition and limited forecasting capability
Bolboreta Desarrolla applied this approach within a digital fashion media outlet that needed to anticipate editorial trends more accurately.
The challenge was not a lack of information, but rather its fragmentation, which made it difficult to carry out predictive analysis capable of supporting decisions with data. Reader behaviour, search activity, publications from other media outlets, and social media conversations were all inputs that needed to be analysed in a connected way.
The main difficulty, however, was different in this case: we had to translate a phenomenon as volatile and context-dependent as fashion into models capable of delivering genuine predictive value. Adding to the challenge was the fact that no standard solution existed for editorial forecasting in the fashion and lifestyle sector, meaning we had to build the algorithms from scratch.
The solution: NLP and proprietary models integrated into the newsroom
To address this challenge, an internal editorial support platform was developed using a LAMP environment (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP), incorporating proprietary Python algorithms for classification, probabilistic analysis, and incremental learning, as well as the Natural Language Toolkit (NLTK) library for Natural Language Processing and text analysis.
The system included specific data structures designed to manage terms, context, frequency, and semantic relationships. Development followed an iterative process, with each cycle validated by the editorial team.
The results: Better-informed decisions and an evolving system
Once the tool was integrated into the live editorial workflow, a dedicated validation environment was created to measure its predictive capabilities against the manual approach. The accuracy of its recommendations improved steadily through continuous learning.
What we observed after introducing the tool was a shift in roles: the editorial team moved from a fully manual workflow to a data-assisted one, while still relying on expert judgment to strengthen quality.
Measuring this improvement required the creation of a dedicated validation environment that compared the system's recommendations with manual editorial selection. This enabled us to confirm that the solution provided genuine forecasting capabilities.
What benefits does AI and NLP bring to trend forecasting?
The benefits of combining AI and NLP to anticipate trends can become a significant strategic advantage:
- Improved decision-making: prioritizes content with a greater likelihood of gaining traction while reducing individual and manual biases, complementing human judgment
- Competitive advantage: enables the identification of emerging signals at an early stage and shortens reaction times (time-to-publish). This is particularly important in sectors where relevance has a short lifespan.
- Unlocking the value of unstructured data: transforms large volumes of dormant information into actionable knowledge and concrete decisions.
- Versatility and scalability across sectors: allows the same architecture to be applied to media, retail, ecommerce, investment, innovation, and competitive intelligence by translating human language into predictions of future behaviour.
