Science begins long before the laboratory. It starts with a question, a failed attempt, or the determination to prove that something seemingly impossible can in fact be achieved. That idea formed the foundation of “Construir un sueño” Building a Dream, an educational and inspirational workshop launched by Bolboreta Innova Group in collaboration with the Margarita Salas Foundation, based on the children's story Surcar Un Sueño, starring Cairo, a little pig who dreams of flying.
The workshop, part of Bolboreta Impacta, Bolboreta's social responsibility initiative dedicated to promoting projects with sustainable social impact, was delivered through the classrooms of the STEAM Ambassadors Program run by the Margarita Salas Foundation. The programme is aimed at primary school children in rural communities and underserved neighbourhoods and seeks to bring science and technology closer to young learners through an emotional and deeply human perspective.
Using the Design Thinking methodology, participants were challenged to imagine and build prototypes capable of helping Cairo glide or fly. Through this process, they explored concepts related to balance, aerodynamics, weight, and lift.
Beyond teaching scientific principles, the workshop aimed to communicate a powerful message: making mistakes is part of learning, and curiosity, creativity, and perseverance are also scientific tools.
"Science is often presented as something distant or reserved for a select few, when in reality it begins with something as human as asking questions or trying to understand the world. Seeing children become excited because their idea worked, or because they understood why it didn't, reminds us that inspiring scientific vocations begins long before choosing a career," explains Itzal Arbide, CEO of Bolboreta Innova Group.
For the Margarita Salas Foundation, initiatives like this help address one of today's major educational challenges: sparking an interest in science from an early age while ensuring that the experience remains inclusive and accessible.
"We often talk about fostering scientific vocations with the future in mind, but we also have a responsibility to ensure that every child feels they have the right to imagine themselves as part of science. Activities like this create something truly valuable because they connect learning, self-confidence, and creativity through meaningful and inspiring experiences," says Lucía Viñuela, President of the Margarita Salas Foundation.
Ultimately, the initiative combined reading, experimentation, play, and teamwork into an experience that allowed participants to understand science through both practice and emotion. Through Cairo's story, children explored confidence, collaboration, and the ability to persevere in the face of frustration.
With initiatives such as this, Bolboreta Innova Group reinforces its commitment to bringing scientific knowledge closer to everyday life and transforming it into a force for social change. Because sometimes a childhood dream can become the gateway to science.
